What does it mean? A new trend is work without a fixed place.

Brazil approved at the end of January a special visa for workers who are digital nomads. It became fashionable to work anywhere in the world. In addition to countries creating a special visa for digital nomads - which attracts visitors and moves the country's economy - there have also been business models focused on attracting this audience, such as proptechs (Airbnb and others).

Have you ever thought about living as a digital nomad - the person who travels while working remotely? This is a trend when we think about the future of work.

Approximately 35 million workers in the world have the digital nomad profile and we will reach 1 billion by 2035, according to Fragomen's Global Migration Trends 2022 report.

WHAT EXACTLY IS IT?..... TO BE A DIGITAL NOMAD?

?Someone who doesn't have a fixed place to work and uses technology to their advantage by working remotely?, says Marina Toledo, talent acquisition lead at StartSe.

However, not all people who work remotely are digital nomads. They need, in practice, to combine traveling to different places with work - and in the long term. In fact, it became a way of life.

How does digital nomad make money? They receive a salary from the company - which has a remote working culture - from which they are hired or as a freelancer.

THE ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES OF BEING A DIGITAL NOMAD:

According to Marina Toledo from StartSe, some advantages are the quality of life, better performance at work for people who have difficulty concentrating at the office and freedom to travel wherever they want without having to ask for time off. ?The person just depends on an internet network to work with quality?, says the specialist.

But there are also disadvantages: ?In some cases, they can be part of this new reality: ineffective communication, lack of organization due to excess freedom, a lot of work forgetting to stop, problems in handling virtual tools if the internet is not of high quality or the signal from the location is bad?, says Marina.

HOW TO BECOME A DIGITAL NOMAD?

First of all, it's important that you check the pros and cons. Then, organize your finances and see which locations fit your budget. Many countries, for example, offer a nomad visa, which allows you to stay longer there than on a tourist visa. In some cases, proof of stable remote income is required.

Other tips are: study about the culture of the place, if the internet works, if your work equipment (computer, phone and or microphone) is working and use cloud services. And the hosting? It depends on the lifestyle you want. Some options are renting a hotel room or apartment, house or room on Airbnb or similar platforms.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS IN EMPLOYING DIGITAL NOMADS?

According to Marina, ?the anywhere office means that the company does not have to lay off excellent professionals if they choose to move far away that they cannot work in the office. (...) The method also extends to cases of long-term distant trips and even backpacking?.

?Another pro is that, with the diversity of having people from different parts of Brazil and the world, the chance to innovate with different insights and points of view is huge. The enrichment of Employer Branding is indisputable when we attribute the anywhere office to the company's culture?, says the specialist.

THE CHALLENGES IN EMPLOYING DIGITAL NOMADS:

Everything that is very good also has its challenges. For instance, some companies that were not born in the digital age suffered and still suffer a culture shock. ?In companies that are born in this scenario, however, there may be a lack of integration between people, which can also be a detrimental factor in retaining talent,? says the specialist.

Furthermore, according to Maurício Guidi, a partner in the labor department at Pinheiro Neto, it is necessary to pay attention to the taxation of each country. This is because, ?the country does not have tax treaties or social security agreements with all countries?, he says.

If the company wants to hire a foreign nomad, it is possible. And which law must the company follow: what is the nomad's origin or that of Brazil? It needs to be evaluated on a case-by-case basis. ?A digital nomad can be governed by the law of Brazil, the country in which he works, or the headquarters of the employing company?, says Mauricio Guidi da Pinheiro Neto.
